Gun Control – any law, policy, practice, or proposal designed to define, restrict, or limit the possession, production or modification, importation, shipment, sale, and/or use of firearms.
These words are a hot topic in today’s modern society, including nationally, with such tragedies as the Columbine High School massacre, the Fort Hood shooting, Sandy Hook, and the Washington Navy Yard shooting. What is the historical trend of violence and gun control, with firearms and ammunition restriction or availability? Not just beginning with the United States and “The Shot Heard Around the World”, but worldwide. I believe it is important to know how different societies handled the availability and use of firearms, since their conception till the present day, and the types of governments that enforced gun laws and if they were successful. In order to see what will work in present and future time, the past holds the key to trends and what actions were successful and unsuccessful, and the consequence that might come of it. Arguments are constantly made on both sides of the issue, even with the tragedies we face in today’s society, some of the information might come as a surprise. As a historian it is important to look at both sides of an issue with an open mind and assess each argument carefully, to come to a properly researched conclusion, even if it wasn’t’t the outcome you wanted or perceived it to be.
